What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup asks the domain name system what records exist for a hostname — the IP address it points to (A and AAAA), where its mail goes (MX), which nameservers are authoritative (NS), and so on. This tool queries public DNS-over-HTTPS resolvers directly from your browser.

Why do results differ from what I see on my machine?

DNS is cached at many layers — your operating system, your router, and your ISP. This tool queries Cloudflare and Google public resolvers, which may have newer or older cached data than your local resolver. The TTL column shows how long each record may be cached.

What is a TTL?

Time to live, in seconds. It tells resolvers how long they may cache a record before asking again. A low TTL means changes propagate quickly; a high TTL means less DNS traffic but slower propagation when you change a record.

Can Pingura alert me if my DNS records change?

Yes. Pingura supports DNS monitors that check a hostname resolves to the value you expect, and alerts you if the answer changes or the lookup fails. DNS monitors are available on Starter plans and above.
